The initial part of the research on Croatian publications in Brazil is funded as a one-year project of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb in 2025 under the title Croatian Emigrant Press in Brazil: Preliminary Research and Methodology Testing. Brazil is specific compared to the rest of South America due to the language, but also the assumed smaller production of publications, so faster and more efficient testing of the methodology applied in earlier research (for the areas of Australia and New Zealand) is expected. Preliminary reviews have established insufficient processing and availability of material in public library catalogues, which makes research difficult. Publications by Croats in Brazil are often not available in Croatian institutions, and the identification of authors of Croatian origin in Brazil is also difficult, given that they are often fourth or fifth generations who do not have Croatian names and do not speak Croatian. Therefore, the purpose of the project is to conduct preliminary research on publications by Croats in Brazil, test the methodology, create an initial bibliography and criteria for digitization. Due to limited budget and time, the research is planned to be conducted in institutions in São Paulo, as it is the most organized and largest Croatian community that will be involved in data collection. Types of publications and editorial approaches will be investigated (method of citing and structure of bibliographic data, characteristics of the publisher, language of publication, frequency of publication for serial publications, scope, graphic design, etc.).
