Conference Croatian Language and Culture Abroad

The conference Croatian Language and Culture Abroad: Exploring the Past, Present and Future was held in Zagreb from 3 to 4 November 2025, organized by the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb. Ana Barbarić had a presentation entitled Creative Contributions of Croats from New Zealand as Part of the Written Heritage of Croatian Emigrants, and Ivana Hebrang Grgić had a lecture entitled Self-Published Books by Croats in Australia. The abstracts of the presentations were published in the book of abstracts.

 

 

Plavi razgovori (Blue talks)

In August 2025, an interview with Ivana Hebrang Grgić was recorded, and broadcast on September 28, on Croatian Radio – Radio Dubrovnik. The conversation was about activities on the Croatian Emigrant Press project and the digitization of audio recordings by Prof. Hans-Peter Stoffel as part of the Dalmatian Speeches in New Zealand project. The author of the show is Jelena Obradović Mojaš. The interview can be listened to on the Croatian Radio website, and is also stored in the Croatian Emigrant Press Repository.

Migration processes between Croatia and South America

The 3rd international scientific conference Migration processes between Croatia and South America: Consolidation of transnational networks of action and participatory research was held from November 13 to 15, 2024, in person and online. On November 13, in Zagreb, Ana Barbarić held a presentation entitled Creating bibliographies of publications by Croatian emigrants as a contribution to the preservation of written heritage. Ivana Hebrang Grgić participated in the Spanish-language panel on November 14 by presenting the title Publications of Croats in South America: creating bibliographies and digitization.

Dalmatian Cultural Society – research

Research was conducted in the archive, library and museum of the Dalmatian Cultural Society in Auckland on November 15 and 16, 2023. The most attention was paid to family books. Digital copies of old inventory books were made, which need to be further researched and analyzed in order to determine which records refer to family books. One dissertation related to Croats in New Zealand and several books were also found. After a thorough analysis and identification of the metadata, new records will be entered into the bibliography.

Digitized issues of Zora

Newspaper Zora was published in Auckland from 1913 to 1916. In total, at least 121 issues were published, of which 16 are available in the National and University Library in Zagreb, 36 in the library of the War Memorial Museum in Auckland and 52 in the archives of the Dalmatian Cultural Society in Auckland. As part of the Croatian Emigrant Press Project, in cooperation with the National and University Library in Zagreb, in September 2023, all copies kept in that library were digitized (15 complete and one incomplete copy).

 

Kliofest – festival of history

At the Kliofest festival, the Croatian Emigrant Almanac 2023 published by the Croatian Heritage Foundation was presented. As part of the event, Ivana Hebrang Grgić gave a presentation on researching the history of Croats in Australia and New Zealand based on the text published in the Almanac. The Almanac was presented by Ljiljana Dobrovšak, PhD, and Vesna Kukavica, the editor.

 

94 issues of Napredak digitized

In collaboration with the Auckland Council Libraries, all issues that are available in the Auckland City Library have been digitized – 94 out of a total of probably 117 published issues. All issues will be available free of charge on the project website and on Kura: Heritage Collections Online and the project repository. Four sample copies are currently available on the project website.
